Week 6

 




The first thing we did this week in lab was check on our plants. Ours grew very nicely and had several different flowers coming from it. We then pollinated our flowers with bees in hopes of reproducing more flowers. I am excited to come back to class next week and see how much our plant has changed. 

In lab this week, we also talked about the 6 different kinds of biomes and food chains that take place in each biome. My group and I looked at the grassland biome and looked at different food chains that happened there. It was really cool to take a closer look at a particular biome and look at its food chains. I think this was helpful and made us also look at what would happen if a natural disaster were to occur in that biome. 

I could relate what we learned to previous information that I have learned in earlier science classes and also in lecture last week. I like how we got time to dive deeper into biomes in lab this week. I thought every part of this week's lab was clear and easy to follow along with. Since I have been introduced to this information in the past, it was easier to stay engaged with the material. It was also made clear because of the fun activities we got to do. 

I will be able to use a lot of this information in my future classroom someday. I liked the activity where each group did some research on one biome and a food chain in that biome. I like this activity for a future classroom because it allows students to do their own research but also allows them to share what research they found with their classmates. I also liked the turtle activity because it allowed us to get out of our seats and use our hands. I think this kind of activity would go over really well in an elementary classroom.

    Hi Kendra! I am also very excited to see the changes in our plants next week since we pollinated them. I agree that both of the activities we did would be good in our future classrooms because they were very engaging. I thought the slideshow activity about the biomes was a good one since it allows for collaboration and creativity.

    Hi Kendra! I am excited to use this information in my future classroom as well. I thought everything we did this week was very engaging and hands on which is important when teaching science! I am curious to see what the bees will do to our flowers. We will have to stay tuned till next week! Good post!

    Hi Kendra! I enjoyed reading your post and hearing your thoughts on lab this week. I found it interesting how much your plants grew, I only had one flower this week! Similar to you, I enjoyed the activities that we did this week such as the pollination and turtle game. These are definitely both activities I would use in my future classroom. I also appreciate reviewing these concepts, so that I will be able to better teach these subjects to my future students. Great post!

  This week in lab, we worked with our groups to figure out what happens when you mix vinegar and baking soda. We were supposed to come up with a lesson to teach to 5th graders about it, but my group just did multiple different experiments until we saw firsthand the conservation of matter. We could not figure out how to show the conservation of matter, so we tried four different ways until we finally got the same mass before and after mixing vinegar and baking soda. We could not explain what was happening exactly until we all came back together and saw how the gas in the beaker blew out the candle.  I am not sure if I can use this experiment in my future classroom because I want to teach kindergarten or 1st grade. I think this lesson is a little bit out of reach for that grade level. Week 12: Properties of Matter

  Today in lab, we looked into the different properties of matter. I learned about the different properties of matter and how different they can be depending on the type of matter you are examining. There were some objects that we were looking at that I thought would be magnetic, but they weren't (like the coin). It was cool to learn about the properties of matter through a hands-on experiment that is elementary level.  I could relate this information to prior knowledge because I have learned about the different properties in previous science classes. Some of them I can't remember ever testing, so it was cool to look at multiple different properties and see how they varied. None of this information was new to me, but I like how we got to test them with hands-on experimentation.  I can apply this learning to my future classroom because I think this is friendly for an elementary classroom.
