Week 15: Vinegar and Baking Soda
I am not sure if I can use this experiment in my future classroom because I want to teach kindergarten or 1st grade. I think this lesson is a little bit out of reach for that grade level. I think this is a great lesson to teach to 5th graders, though, because it gives them a lot of autonomy over figuring out what is really happening when vinegar and baking soda are mixed. I would have to make sure to get the measurements down before doing the experiment so the mass stays the same, because even .1 off is a lot for a 5th grader to believe what you are saying.
I had done a similar experiment with putting a balloon on a bottle and mixing vinegar and baking soda to make the balloon inflate. I could not remember what happened, so I thought it was interesting to test it again and see if there was a difference if you used a bigger bottle vs a smaller bottle.
